Why should I go on a sailing trip in Greece?

We can talk for hours about why Greece is one of our favourite destinations for a holiday at sea – not least when it comes to the beautiful surroundings, genuine people and Greek food. And why choose to travel to just one Greek island when you can visit several? We sail around the Ionian Islands, to verdant islands such as Lefkas, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Corfu and Ithaka. Not only azure waters and beautiful beaches await here, but also Venetian castles and churches, olive groves, plunging limestone cliffs, cool caves, cosy tavernas and a pace of life that helps you to unwind. Each island has its charm and on a sailing trip crewed by More Sailing you will experience the many sides of Greece in a relaxing way.

What’s it like to sail in Greece?

For those looking for great sailing in beautiful surroundings, Greece is the best choice for you. The great thing about sailing in Greece’s Ionian Archipelago is that the season is long and both the air and the water are pleasant until late autumn. Add good sailing in stable winds and fewer boats than at other destinations and Greece becomes the favourite for sailing holidays with friends, family or new acquaintances. Did you know that Greece has one of the longest coastlines in Europe?

What is typical Greek food?

One of Greece's strengths is its amazing food culture and the islands of the Ionian Archipelago are no exception. In cosy tavernas you will often find classics such as Greek salad, the deep-fried cheese saganaki and delicious moussaka – and definitely don't miss out on tasting the local dishes of fish, lamb and goat.

The food culture of this region retains influences from Italian cuisine after being ruled for so long by the Republic of Venice. A favourite is pastitsada, which is slow-cooked tender meat in cinnamon-spiced tomato sauce. In addition to the delicious food culture, you will be greeted by genuine Greek hospitality wherever you go – a nice touch that makes you feel warmly welcome.

Which islands and destinations are recommended for your first visit?

To go sailing in Greece is a dream for any traveller who likes to discover authentic islands in an unexplored part of the Mediterranean. The west coast of Greece and specifically the Ionian islands have many precious gems which have managed to avoid mass tourism.

Here you’ll find the beautiful island of Kefalonia with the small fishing village of Assos, which looks like it’s straight from a postcard. The mythical island of Ithaka, home to Odysseus, attracts visitors with its high mountains, beautiful hiking trails and beaches only accessible by boat, while on the island of Kostos there are goats walking around the village. Don't miss out on visiting the windmill converted into a bar at sunset!

Those who sail north in the archipelago can visit traditional islands such as Paxos and Antipaxos with their green olive groves and turquoise bays. The list goes on and so do we when exploring this island realm.

What can I learn about Greek culture & mythology in the area?

Take a journey through history and learn more about the mythological king Odysseus on the beautiful island of Ithaka. In the harbour town and Ithaka’s largest settlement Vathy, you will be greeted by a heroic statue depicting Odysseus, the king who, after participating in the Trojan War, returned to the island of Ithaka and his beloved wife Penelope. On the mainland, just north of Preveza, you can explore five archaeological sites – including the impressive Ottoman stone bridge in Arta and the amphitheatre of Dodona.
